Fretting and prepping

I survived the 'Loop', four 1 hour interviews with staffers at Amazon Web Services.  Now the fretting starts. Fret,  Old English  fretan  ‘devour, consume ’ I really want this job, it's a baby technical account manager role, put L plates on, do the heavy lifting for the existing TAMs so they can dive deeper into their customers.  The potential for learning is just so wide.   And they are nice people too.   A good substitute for my compadres from whom IBM have cut me loose.   Ugh, I see a cliff ahead, a pit of self doubt if this week brings rejection.  Replaying my interviews I see lots of opportunities for them to confirm, he doesn't raise the bar. How to prepare ...  My good friend Harry says,      Think of ways of being successful in new companies .  It's a version of asking, what does success look like? I can work with that, a beer to you Harry.   Mum says,       A...

WALGA action

Following on from yesterday's letter writing workshop, looking at how New Zealand's local governments are being primed to report on climate related financial risk and opportunities. I found a fascinating report from the West Australian Local Government Association  (WALGA), created by Climate Planning using the informed.cities framework, that reviewed all public documents from every Council in WA relating to climate change governance. All the Councils have a legally required Stragtegic Community Plan but the quality of those plans was not considered to be good overal.  Nearly 2 thirds are at the average level or below it. 19 councils (14%) scored High 34 councils (24%) scored Intermediate 43 councils (31%) scored Basic 42 councils (30%) have no consideration of climate change in their Strategic Plans and were scored None . I couldn't find the data for the City of Canning, but it makes a good talking point. Financial reporting was worse.  Only 88% of Councils ha...

Feeling greener

Had a great time talking with Emma Barrett from Clean State and three supporters during a letter writing workshop.  Not only did I pick up some new threads to investigate but also learnt a lot more about Clean State themselves. I noticed a lot of references to their  jobs plan  in the Green Party's policy documents. Quick decamp to the State Government House to watch the presentation of 29,000 messages of protest against the logging of old growth forest in south west. A huge thanks to everyone who came to the Postcard Handover yesterday 💚 Also a massive thank you to everyone who lent... Posted by WA Forest Alliance on  Wednesday, 10 March 2021

Next prep and more study

Second interview with AWS tomorrow so lots of prep on their behavioural question methods. Also found an introductory course into Environment, Social Governance , ESG hosted by the Corporate Finance Institute.  Here's a scary lesson from the later stages of the course, there are a number of rating and ranking agencies that will place a company within a rank based on publicly avaiable ESG information. But they warn that each agency has its own method of determining the rank, which leaves very little conformity across the agencies.  Here's a comparison they provide between three clothing manufacturers and four agencies. Company MSCI Sustainalytics Just Capital CSRHub Under Armour Not ranked Low Risk, but ranked 49/186 377/922 overall, 10/36 in household goods 58/100 Adidas AAA Low Risk, but ranked 22/186 Not ranked 98/100 Nike A Low Risk, but ranked 45/186 301/922 overall, 7/36 in household goods 96/100

Low, then low no more

Self-indulgent wounded ego after performing badly in a technical interview with AWS.  Spent the afternoon feeling useless and watching telly, only to be told that I had been selected for round 2.  Ashamed now at my response.  Roll on round 2. Started looking in earnest for a mentor on climate-related financial disclosure.  Can't pursue this further if it is a non-starter.

Over chicken

The dogs need a low fat diet, so I am trying to find a source of cheap, freerange chicken to boil for them.  Today I found 3 packets of thighs on special going out of date.  I had no idea I was committing myself to an entire morning of trimming, boiling and dicing.  I feel like Farmer Boggis, no doubt I smell like him too. Received a call back from AWS for their Technical Account Manager role, phone interview next week.  Will have to do my homework. Encouraged to submit CV for Bankwest for IT Helpdesk role and for KIT, though I've no idea what the job description there would be. Washed the car too, another hot day, dusty before I'd even put it back in the car port.

My kingdom for a mentor

Spent the morning watching the Climate Disclosure Standards Board's webinar called "Improve your TCFD reporting", making notes.  Enrolled in part 2, to be at 6am this Thursday.  Might have to watch the replay of that too. Redirected by an email from Mark highlighting two Support roles at Bankwest, and applied for them. Still need a mentor so with that in mind I enrolled in the Carbon Management unit at Murdoch. My denttabs arrived too, in compostible packaging called " Heropack ". Phew, it's hot today.
